LONDON!!!!

It's been a pretty eventful week and I've got more to update but I'll start with my London trip first! :) It was quite a last minute decision to travel down last weekend (July 23-26) coz our test on Monday was postponed to August. So I decided to go to London alone and meet up with my cousin before she go back to M'sia. It was a short but relaxing trip...not too much sightseeing (coz I'll be going again in Sept)...beautiful weather...had some good food...and best of all awesome hospitality! :) Thanks to Audrey for being such a great host!! :) Not many pics of me coz was exploring the city alone half of the time. :)

23 July 2010 (Fri): Sheffield-London

Bought my National Express return ticket for £10, could have been cheaper if I got it earlier but it's still pretty cheap I guess. The journey took about 4.5 hours coz of Fri evening traffic.

Arriving London!! So many people and cars...felt like I just got out of kampung!!

Yea I know I'm a bit 'sam pat' to get excited over crowd, people, and hecticness...but trust me it's normal to get this 'culture shock' after being stuck in a kampung for 6 weeks!

In the tube station...a.k.a. Underground. It's just like New York's subway...but the trains here are cleaner. Imagine the entire London built on these underground.

Around Bayswater station where my cousin live. Quite a lot of chinese restaurants around that area. Both Four Seasons and Gold Mine were packed with people so we decided to 'ta pao' our dinner from Gold Mine.

Duck rice...yummyyyyy!!

24 July 2010 (Sat): Strolling around central London

Guess where all these people are heading to??

Answer: To see the Queen!!! :) O-M-G...sooooo many people at Buckingham Palace!!!! Everyone wanted to catch the 'Changing Guards' at 11.30am...of course can't really see much coz 'people mountain people sea'! Look at the 2 adults in first pic...we thought only kids do this...wrong...this shows how desperate people can be to see the guards! :p I would definitely do this if I was at Beckingham Palace...haha! :)

It's so fascinating to see such huge crowd...oh yea...welcome to London!! These are all tourists from all over the world...it's summer break + Saturday...no wonder la!

Trying to crop out the people

Buckingham Palace!

The Red Guards with their 'mo mo' hat!! These guards' job is to 'perform' everyday at 11.30am...it's more like doing a show instead of for procedural purposes.

Along the way to Big Ben

Hey Ben!!

The Houses of Parliament

Thames river & London Eye

The 'original' Eye before all other Eyes popped up.

Had lunch at this noodle place. They serve asian food and it's interesting coz they used the US take-out box concept. That was my Singapore Seafood Noodles.

Trafalgar Square & The National Gallery

People here, people there, people everywhere! Quite a lot of Europeans I guess coz I didn't understand what the people around were talking most of the time.

Picadilly Circus. Big bro asked me to come to this Lilywhites store to get him some jerseys but my mission failed. ;p

Spent an entire afternoon walking along Oxford Street. The street is just like a mall...the busiest and the most dense shopping street in central London. You can find almost all the big brands here.

Summer sales was still on so it was definitely a good time to shop. Rachel would have spent a lot of moolah if she was here..hehe! As for me, I didn't shop much but instead was observing the what shopping bags people were carrying. ;)

Her Majesty Theatre where Phantom of the Opera was showing. As usual, many people queuing to watch. I may watch this when I go again in Sept.

Planning to watch these 2 musicals too in Sept...hope I'll have enough money for these.

Dinner at Gourmet Burger Kitchen...it was gooood! :)

25 July 2010 (Sun): Strolling around central London (cont)

The streets were already busy on Sunday morning. There were a lot of red buses everywhere. People were waiting outside Primark for the shop to open...crazy right?

Went to All Souls church with Audrey for Sunday service

Chinatown in London.

Dim Sum lunch at Imperial China, Chinatown. Another yummylicious meal!! :)

Thanks Audrey for hosting me over the weekend! :)

Visited Audrey's school...she's studying medicine in University College London (UCL).

Yay...my turn to be in the pic! :)

UCL hospital, biological sciences, and anatomy dept. Erm...these are for smart people...I only see 'stars and moons' if you tell me about science. =.=

Walked from UCL to the British Museum

The British Museum. They had this South Africa Landscape exhibit outside the museum...took some photos for flowers lovers.

Inside the museum...it was huge!

The museum was so big...and I'm not really a big fan of museum...so didn't walk much. If you want me to describe about this museum...I'll say it's a museum that exhibits random things 'stolen' from all over the world...haha! :p

26 July 2010 (Mon): Byebye London...I'll be back!! :)

Boarded the bus back to Sheffield from Victoria Coach Station at 8.30am

And what a coincidence...I bumped into ChinSuey at the bus station and he was also taking the same bus to Sheffield! I haven't met him since first year of diploma and he went on to study in north London...and of so many places to meet...we actually met in London..what a small world!

So this wraps up my London trip. Proud of myself coz I managed to survive exploring London alone with my hand-drawn map, tube map, backpack and the Oyster card (from Audrey). :) Overall this was a very nice trip...mainly due to the warm hospitality...hehe!!

To sum up, London is just like New York...metropolitan city with many many people from all over the world...sometimes you don't even feel like you're in UK...but the great mix of people is what makes London interesting! :)

Revisiting London

18 Sept 2010 (Sat): I'm back in London, one of my pit-stop before going home. Thanks to Audrey for hosting us again. =) I've covered most of the attractions during the last trip so not planning to do much this time. Still trying to get more rest and recover from my back and arm pain before going on our 'adventurous' backpacking trip to Scotland & Barcelona. Spent some time walking around the city revisiting several places with WS y'day to help her take photos and also visited Tower Bridge (missed this last trip). Was really exhausted yday so just gonna stay in and chill today.

Embankment Bridge

View of London Eye & Big Ben from the bridge...captured that sweet couple there. :p Love it! =)

London Eye was filled with people as usual. Not as many as the last time though probably coz summer is over.

Big Ben & House of Parliament from a better view this time.

Saw these people shooting something so went nearer to 'kaypo'. I didn't know that it was London Fashion Week until I heard the lady reporting "Welcome back...today is the 2nd day of London Fashion Week...the sky is bright...." bla bla bla...lol!!

London Eye...WS practicing her photography skills for more of these in the next 4 weeks.

Passed by Tower of London on the way to Tower Bridge. Saw 2 guys in tux when we were waiting to cross the street...kahwin ka??

Tower Bridge!!! =) Beautiful yea!

We saw this couple taking wedding photos there...sweet! =) Obviously the bridegroom is Scottish...this was my first time seeing ppl wearing kilt for wedding...pretty cool huh! I was the 'stalker-photographer'...lol! At least I just took their picture...another tourist was brave enough to ask the bridegroom to take pic with her...and his expression was like 'huh?? Okkayy'...and his bride was laughing at the side...lol!!

Went to Chinatown for some 'angmohtized' chinese food.

Traveled around the city with tube...very convenient but quite pricey.

That's all for now. I'm trying to update as frequently as I can so that I don't need to pile up everything and do it all at once. So stay tuned for more updates!! =)

Billy Elliot!!!

20 September 2010 (Mon): Finally...accomplished my 'mission' of watching this musical!!! =) Missed it in Broadway 1.5 years ago, so told myself that I ain't missing it this time around in West End. :p There are plenty of musicals to choose from but it was easy choice for me this time...Billy Elliot...coz it's all about ballet and Sir Elton John's music. =)

The ticket counter opens at 10.30am but I arrived earlier to grab the discounted tickets. There were also other people queuing there already...shows how 'laku' this show is yea. :p I was the first to get the ticket so managed to get it for Â£19.50 (compared to normal price of Â£60)...and I got a pretty good seat too. My seat was supposed to be 'restricted view' but I thought it was good...3rd row from the stage and I could see all the cast clearly. This show was not so much about effects or lighting so being near to the stage was greattt.

Thought I was running late so took the tube to Victoria station...but still managed to arrive about half an hour before the show started.

Inside Victoria Palace Theatre...nice!!! It was Monday and the theatre was 'full house'...this show is still so popular even though it's been running for more than 5 years...impressive! :) See how near I was to the stage...could see every details...lol! :p

I was busy taking self-portrait while waiting so the Argentinian lady sitting beside me offered to help me take a pic...lol!

The show started off with Scott Mckenzie as Billy Elliot. Googled yesterday and found out that he's a new Billy...his debut performance was on Sept 6th.

But half way through the show...a stage crew came out and said that Billy was not feeling well so the show had to stop for a few minutes...hmm...that was random. After a few minutes, the stage crew came out again and say that Scott McKenzie will be replaced by Aaron Watson for the rest of the show. Aaron appeared on Britain's Got Talent in 2009.

Image
Not bad though...got to see 2 Billys perform in one show. :p Aaron Watson (left) & Scott McKenzie (right).

The show lasted for 3 hours and ended at 10.30pm. This show was definitely worth the price. =)

Around-the-World 2017 ✈ London

I've always been fascinated by the idea of traveling around the world, and I'm thankful to be able to fulfill a realistic version of this bucket list item for my 30th birthday. =) Our Round-the-World adventure brought us to 5 countries, 4 continents, covering 36,000 miles in 20 days. It was a great trip and I'll chronologically share about our adventures in the next few posts, so follow along!

Days 1-2
London, UK

London was on of our layover cities en-route to Cape Town. When we first booked this trip, we were supposed to travel through Istanbul. However, that flight was cancelled and we managed to reroute through London instead, which turned out to be a better option. I've been to London before but hubby hasn't, so our 12 hours layover was the perfect opportunity to cover the main sights, and even squeeze in a quick meet up!

9 Aug 2017 (Wed): Huntsville - Chicago - London

Huntsville is an expensive airport to fly in and out of, but not when we use frequent flier miles. :) While checking in, we found out that we couldn't check out bags all the way to Cape Town, apparently because our layover in London was more than 12 hours and we were switching to a different airline. That means we had to claim our bags in London and store it somewhere while we go sightseeing (bummer!).

On a side note, I felt like we should have been able to check out bags all the way through to Cape Town because it's on the same ticket and both United and South African Airways are Star Alliance partners, just that the staff didn't know how to do it with our crazy route.

Landed in Chicago after a short 2-hr flight and went straight to the United Club lounge at Concourse F. It was nice to be able to rest and have some hot food at the lounge, thanks to the complimentary United Club membership I got with the United Club Card. :P

Our flight was departing from Terminal 1 so we decided to also explore the United Club at Concourse B (near Gate B6). This lounge was bigger but more crowded, the food was exactly the same.

Our 8-hour red-eye flight from Chicago to London was a lil' disappointing for a long-haul flight, minimal legroom and sad entertainment system. But our goal was to sleep through this flight so it didn't matter. Well, at least they served dinner and breakfast. :P

10 Aug 2017 (Thurs): London Sightseeing

Arrived London Heathrow at 8.30am, cleared immigration fairly quickly with our 'kiasu' skills, collected and consolidated our bags so that we only need to store one bag (cheaper) at the excess baggage. Cost Â£11 to store one bag at the airport. =.= It would have been cheaper to store our bags at Victoria station, but we didn't want to carry them all the way to the city.

After sorting out our luggage situation, it's finally time to make our way into the city. Bought the off-peak Day Travel Card for Â£12.30 per person, and hopped on Picadilly line from Heathrow airport to Hyde Park Corner station. The tube ride took about 45 min, enough for a short nap.

From Hyde Park Corner Station, we walked through Wellington Arch to Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace was crowded as usual. We then continued walking to Westminster Abbey. It was a pretty good bit of walking and we could have taken a bus for free with our travel card but I wasn't sure which one to hop on. Fortunately, the weather was nice and cool.

Next...London's iconic Big Ben and Palace of Westminster!

Different views of Big Ben and Westminster Palace. Notice the time on Big Ben, we made it there just in time for the 12pm bell chime. Found out later that we were lucky to hear the chime before the clock is silenced for four years.

It was lunch time so we took the Jubilee line from Westminster Station to London Bridge Station and walked to Borough Market. Tried the grilled cheese at Kappacasein, cheese and olive stick at Bread Ahead, and duck confit sandwich at Le Marché du Quartier. Was glad to catch up with my ex-coach/teammate who's now working in our London office. Thanks for coming over to meet us and treating us lunch! =)

After filling our stomach and getting some rest, we continued walking towards Tower Bridge, passing by the Shard and City Hall.

We decided to call it a day after 5 hours of sightseeing, hopped on the tube at London Bridge station and headed back to the airport.

When we were checking in for our flight to Cape Town at the South African Airways kiosk, I found out that I was placed on the wait list, which freaked me out a little. Fortunately, the customer service agent was nice and helped to sort out our situation. Not quite sure what happened to my ticket but glad that they got me a seat after waiting for 20 minutes.

After 2 flights and a day of sightseeing, having access to a lounge was like an oasis in the airport. My United Club membership gave us access to other Star Alliance lounges in Heathrow but we chose United Club, which is considered the best according to this review.

Fully utilized the super private and huge shower rooms to freshen up before the next red-eye flight.

The food and drinks selections were pretty good too, especially for United Club.

Is it possible to see London in 12 hours? Absolutely! In fact, we did it within 6 hours. Here's an evidence of us walking all around London. =P

As usual, I had an itinerary for the trip and a link to our sightseeing route. :P

Thank you London for the sights and nice weather, till we meet again!
Next destination...Cape Town, South Africa!
